In the United States, according to the CDC, 430 people die to accidental Carbon Monoxide poisoning every year and a staggering 50,000 people are hospitalized each year due to exposure.

It’s important to be prepared regardless if you live in a house or an apartment structure with a professional fire alarm. CO2 can and is deadly if not properly detected. Don’t let an invisible and (sometimes) scentless gas harm you and your family.

X-Sense is here to showcase their new XC04-WX WiFi Carbon Monoxide detector and how it can make a positive difference in a critical situation. Don’t trust that your furnace isn’t working flawlessly and take action with the XC04-WX.

Welcome to my overview of the X-Sense XC04-WX carbon monoxide detector.

Design

White and plastic, the XC04-WX is a fairly simplistic looking device, yet stylish enough to be mounted to a wall or resting on a shelf.

On the face of the XC04-WX are four major components. Starting on the left is the device’s loud 85dB siren grill. In the middle we have a readout backlit LCD display and status-colored LEDs. Then on the right is a large, easy to click silence/test button.

When the backlit LCD display is on, it helps a homeowner quickly see a parts per million (PPM) output of the CO2 levels in the room as well as the device’s battery level and WiFi connectivity strength.

If the siren is activated, the display will automatically illuminate and display the PPM. In addition, colored LEDs are displayed below the display. Green indicates a working device, yellow meaning a fault, and red indicating an emergency. A nice touch is that the unit informs any novice to call 911 when display red, in case this is placed in a child’s room.

Speaking of placement, X-Sense was clever with mounting options. Users can opt to either mount the unit on the wall or use the built-in feet that allow the XC04-WX to stand upright. Personally, I prefer the subtle shelf look, but either are available.

To make setup easier, X-Sense includes a mounting template. If only more companies would do this!

Functionality

A big selling point on the XC04-WX is the built-in WiFi compatibility. When paired to the X-Sense Home Security iOS or Android app, the carbon monoxide detector can be linked to your home’s WiFi and begin sending information to your phone.

WiFi can be a big power draw on any device, so X-Sense includes a CR123A Lithium Battery that helps the detector stay powered for a significant time.

Inside the XC04-WX is an industry standard Electrochemical sensor to detect the CO2 in the room. On both the top and bottom of the device are air vented grills for the sensor to help detect any level of CO2.

Once the device begins to detect 70ppm, the unit will begin to alarm and inform the homeowner of an issue. As the ppm begin to increase, the alarm will begin happening more often. Regardless of the ppm, a push notification is always sent to your phone.

In most homes, this is expected to sit quietly and hope to never trigger, but when it does, you’ll be happy it’s there.

I’d recommend placing the XC04-WX is a bedroom or important person-heavy area. Spend time reading through X-Sense’s well written and well documented manual for more recommendations and CO2 knowledge.

Unfortunately for the overview, I didn’t actively introduce deadly levels of CO2 into my home, but since already reviewing, using, and trusting X-Sense for their smoke detectors, I expect this device to function exactly as intended.

My Final Thoughts

Priced at $39.99, it’s a heftier cost for a device we hope to never use. A majority of the increased pricing goes into the WiFi capability of the XC04-WX, but the wireless capability is one of the most critical parts of such a device.

Whether you’re away from the house, it’s placed in an obscure location, or just want a 24/7 constant monitoring of a baby’s room, instant push notifications to your phone can literally be the difference between life and death.

X-Sense is a brand I’ve become to trust, recommend, and this carbon monoxide detector is yet another one I give my stamp of approval to. Matched with an expected 10-year lifespan, you’ll be happy you own this when you need this.
