During my time with a previous employer, I noticed that the security team there took precautions against malware by creating multiple security banners about the potential dangers of viruses. Their purpose was to spread awareness of how malware can be everywhere and it can even go portable.
Having a net worth of over $6 billion, their intellectual property is what is most important to them as without it they are no better than their many competitors. The biggest threat to a company’s intellectual property isn’t theft, but rather malware that can secretly and effectively attack business files.
In this day and age, malware has become incredibly smart and its intelligence will only get better. The title of this article uses the term “to-go” as in mobile. CDs are fast becoming a thing of the past and the new era has brought us the day of the flash drive, an incredibly fast, cheap, durable, and easy method of transferring files from or to one machine or the other.
The only downside of a flash drive is the lack of security and protection. Many including business personnel, tend to use flash drives for important data as they can store information and carry it along with them. While physical protection is high, the software side of things differs. If a user connects a flash drive to an infected machine, the malware can quickly and unannounced spread to that flash drive causing data loss and leaving the next PC(s) that the drive is connected to, infected.

Welcome to my review of the ESET DriveSecurity software. Throughout this review, I will be speaking about the flash drive, ESET software, and my final thoughts. I would like to thank ESET for providing me with this software.
The Flash Drive
ESET provided me with a Kingston DataTraveler Vault Privacy USB 3.0 flash drive, which is a personal favorite of mine. A few months ago, I took the opportunity to review this outstanding flash drive. With a top tier encryption level, superb build quality, and a large array of customization, the Kingston DataTraveler makes for the perfect drive to match to ESET’s software.
That said, ESET does not limit users to Kingston manufactured flash drives. When purchasing the DriveSecurity software, you are provided with one license (works on one USB) that lasts for one year; meaning there is no need to replace your current flash drives.
The Kingston drive I have offered 4GB of storage (more is available) and is both encrypted by Kingston and protected by the ESET software. During my testing, I found that the drive maintained a constant speed even while a scan was undergoing. While I cannot speak for other flash drives, I can say that my performance testing was flawless with the Kingston drive.
ESET Software
When a user plugs in the device, they are first asked to enter their encryption password to open the drive. Once the encryption has been passed, the ESET DriveSecurity software begins.
The drive quickly hunts for a connected internet connection and begins downloading the latest security database. Within seconds, the drive was fully updated and ready to go. The security suite installed on the drive is a slimmed down version of the ESET NOD32 Antivirus for computers, an antivirus that is highly recommended by many users here at Tech Support Forum.
ESET uses a real-time scanner on the flash drive, meaning files are constantly checked and scanned while in use. This prevents malicious files from automatically running or transferring to the drive. When exploring the contents of the flash drive, there are three ESET files, one being the main ESET folder, an Autorun application, and finally a method of opening the security program.
Opening the DriveSecurity software shows a fairly basic window that lists a log of that current session. Users can also choose to run a scan if they desire. Due to the incredible speed of flash technology, the scans are quite quick and finish within minutes, if not seconds in most cases.
For malware testing purposes, I used the Eicar Anti-Malware TestFile. This test file is well known among the antivirus research community, it shows the effectiveness of the NOD32 antivirus on the drive. The software functions on all versions of Windows from XP.
Finally, ESET provides a very useful user manual. The manual is well written and explains the functions of the drive. For those who wish to watch instead of read, ESET provides this video on explaining the inner workings of the drive.
My Final Thoughts
In the end, the ESET DriveSecurity is powerful technology that is unlike anything else on the market. The advanced protection from viruses, rootkits, worms, and spyware is superb and I can easily recommend this to those who use USB drives on non-personal machines as well a must have for any company who focuses on security.
