Precise Mouse Movements – A Logitech Performance Mouse MX Review

In a previous Logitech mouse review, I briefly mentioned how computer mice are some of the most robust accessories that we use and own.

Surprisingly, given their operation and the amount of usage a mouse receives it’s amazing that it can withstand the test of time. Having to deal with millions of clicks, thousands of webpages scrolled through, and miles of distance traveled over a mouse pad, it’s surprising that we don’t need to replace them every year.

I am a user that fits that claim quite well. Since it first came out many years ago, I have been using my Logitech Cordless Optical Trackman mouse. Every time I use it, it provides me with a perfect fit and has never let me down or failed on me. You may be in the same boat as I am, using a mouse that is years old and maybe it’s time for an upgrade which is perhaps what led you to this review. Although we enjoy the style, feel, and usage of our mice, keeping them for so long leaves us missing out on the newest and greatest 2014 technologies.

Over many years of computing, Logitech has been manufacturing high quality mice for all types of users. It doesn’t matter if you’re a gamer, casual internet browser, on the go person, or someone who does a bit of everything, Logitech has you covered. Most recently they have crafted a mouse that takes all of their new and revolutionary 2014 technologies and packs them into one performance mouse.

Welcome to my Logitech Performance Mouse MX review. Throughout this review, I will be covering the following subjects: the design, my usage report, and my overall thoughts. I would like to thank Logitech for providing me with this mouse.

The Design

Unlike any mouse I have used in the past, the MX mouse is one of the most comfortable I have ever used and I wouldn’t change anything about the design. Logitech took the idea of a mouse that feels like an extension of your arm and made it a reality.

Coated in a matte black finish with slight silver accents, the MX mouse looks both stylish and professional no matter where you use it. Around the body of the mouse you find very little branding besides a Logitech logo and a Darkfield Laser label on the top.

The structural shell of the MX mouse offers an arched or hump design in the center of the unit. By resting your hand in a relaxed position, your index and middle fingers naturally align with the left and right click buttons. Additionally, the left and right click buttons have a satisfying click to them, not too loud or quiet. Likewise, your thumb falls into the thumb pocket that offers a wing for a relaxed feel. This arch offers a superb feel and is perfect for anybody with small or large hands.

I decided to conduct an experiment where I had multiple users test drive the mouse. From users with small hands to large hands, there were never any complaints that the mouse felt too large or too small. Users who grip their mice rather than resting their hand may find it strange for the first few hours, but should quickly get used to the feeling. At the end of the testing, the results were positive with comments expressing how the mouse felt superb and operated flawlessly.

Between the two clickable buttons is the reasonably sized scroll wheel. Operating in two different modes, the scroll wheel can be used with the Hyper-Fast scrolling mode or be instantly transitioned into a click-by-click operation for precise scrolling. Likewise, the scroll wheel can also act as a third programmable middle click button.

Moving on, your thumb receives its very own resting area. Having a large side indent followed by a bottom wing, your thumb has free range of positions where it can either grip the mouse or relax. The wing area is covered in a black dimpled rubberized material that allows for a comfortable resting position. Additionally, the wing itself is a programmable button with a zoom button and forward/back internet buttons for your thumb to operate.

Finally, we reach the bottom of the mouse where we find three ultra-smooth glide pads. These pads provide precise movement yet are still smooth enough for fast movements. Also located on the bottom is a DarkField laser sensor which is oddly located to the right rather than the center of the mouse. Users will also find some standard product branding and the battery compartment.

My Usage Report

Ever since receiving it over a month ago, the MX mouse has become my daily driver for my PC. My experience with the MX mouse offers a feel and style I wish every mouse had.

Designed for right-handed operation, the extremely comfortable fit matched by the rubberized thumb wing allows users to operate the unit for hours on end. Your hand is never stressed or tired from moving a lot of weight. The mouse’s weight is light yet sturdy enough to offer that perfect feel.

As the inventors of the DarkField laser technology, Logitech has taken this outstanding technology and packed it into this performance mouse. The laser uses a relocated sensor that can better read the laser focus. Due to this change in design, the MX mouse can work on surfaces like glass, a surface other mice fail to work on. For a full explanation on this technology check out this page. Out of the box, the default sensitivity is slightly high and is recommended to be adjusted in the Logitech SetPoint software.

Next, we have the wireless capabilities of the MX mouse. Powered with a single rechargeable AA battery, the MX mouse can roam your entire desk and not be hindered by any wires holding it back. Thanks to the outstanding Logitech Unifying Receiver, movements and clicks are instant and without any delay. Additionally, thanks to the rechargeable battery, the mouse will not cost you hundreds of dollars in replacement batteries. However, the included Logitech rechargeable battery does not provide the same great performance as a high grade rechargeable battery. On the stock battery expect to get a few weeks of usage while a high quality battery lasts a month or two. Charging is performed using the onboard micro USB port and users can always choose to recharge the mouse whilst still using it; a wireless mouse that can go corded if needed.

Lastly, if you happen to take this mouse on an epic gaming adventure or battle your way through a field of tanks, it handles everything you can throw at it. It did not matter if I opened Internet Explorer, played a computer game, or ran Photoshop, the mouse stayed true to its performance title and performed flawlessly.

My Overall Thoughts

All in all, the Logitech Performance Mouse MX is one of the best I have ever used. The 2014 technology and perfect ergonomics offer something that no other mouse can compete against. With a price tag of $99.99 it’s a bit of a stretch for a computer mouse, but certainly worth it if you decide to buy one. A much better option, in my opinion, is to enquire about the Logitech MX800 combo deal. Combined with the Logitech K800 keyboard I reviewed, the MX800 combo, of both the MX mouse and K800 keyboard, is priced at $169.99 which is certainly an outstanding deal for two great products.
