Windows 9? Forget that! Let’s go to Windows 10

Microsoft, yesterday, held their San Francisco event that will unveil the newest and latest version of Windows.

In a surprise to all, Microsoft will dub the new Windows, ‘Windows’ or ‘Windows 10’; skipping over the expected Windows 9 codename. Terry Myerson, VP of operating systems at Microsoft, said it well in stating that it is a substantial leap to skip the Windows 9 branding.

“Windows 10 will run on the broadest amount of devices. A tailored experience for each device,” Myerson said. “There will be one way to write a universal application, one store, one way for apps to be discovered purchased and updated across all of these devices.”

Microsoft’s new scope for Windows is to create a working operating system across every device, from desktop PCs, to tablets, to mobile phones. This is something that Microsoft has had a tough time doing over the years and if it works out for Windows 10, the payout will certainly be substantial.

With the return of the beloved Windows Start menu and the loss of the disliked Metro user interface, Microsoft is making a bold move to better combine Windows 7 and Windows 8. People around the globe are stating that Windows 10 is what Windows 8 really should have been.

In addition, for the ‘screw up’ of Windows 8, there are many rumors around stating that Microsoft will allow all Windows 8 users to upgrade to the new flagship OS for free. An odd rumor indeed, but it could happen as Apple has recently been providing free upgrades with their operating system as well.

“We believe that, together with the feedback you provide us, we can build a product that all of our customers will love…It will be our most open collaborate[d] OS projects ever,” as stated by Myerson.

As the event comes to a close, more and more will be revealed in due course. Microsoft is currently planning to introduce a Release Preview similar to the Windows 8 release. From what has been shown so far, Microsoft’s new and better approach is something that I am excited about and certainly something that I am waiting to see more of. If the free upgrade rumor holds true, then Windows 10 could truly be the right upgrade for Windows 7 users.

As Joe Belfiore, corporate VP of operating systems said: “Windows 8’s focus on touch, the large start screen, the notion of apps running full-screen as they do on tablet devices…that was to salute the idea that this would be more productivity…But we didn’t get it right. With Windows 10, we think we got it right.” Only time will tell if that holds to be true.
