The time has come when Google is rumored to be creating an Android platform television set-top box. With competitors such as Microsoft, Sony, Samsung and Apple, Google has a tough road ahead.

Just recently released by Google, the Chromecast is a $35 USB streaming device that takes your Android device and streams its content to a big screen TV. So far, so good; The Chromecast has been an outstanding hit for Google with sales still continuing. However, it seems that Google is looking to advance to the next level and create a fully functional Android Set-Top Box.

Rumored to handle a large number of different providers such as Hulu Plus, Netflix, YouTube, etc. such a set-box could become so powerful that it would eliminate your cable box. As the set-top box would reportedly run Android KitKat, expect the add-on of Google Play which has thousands of movies and TV series.

The rumors don’t stop at TV content however. Also mentioned is that Google will include a video/motion camera so that Google Hangouts can be accessed, to rival Skype on the new Xbox One. Could this be an All-in-One Google box?

As the newest Consumer Electronics Show is approaching soon, I would expect to see a large number of new Google announcements, along with the name change of Google TV to Nexus TV; hence the reason for the rumored set-top box. Stay tuned for CES coverage here as well.

Only time will tell what Google has in store for us. Remember that these are all rumors and when it comes to technology, more rumors tend to fall through than become reality; it’s even rumored that Amazon will be making their own set-top box. One thing’s for sure, if such rumors do become true, it would be a 2014 launch, and when you’re Google anything is possible.
