Yesterday, Google announced that YouTube has reached 1 billion unique users every month. This translates into about one in every two people on the internet visiting YouTube at least once a month.

YouTube claims that without the rapidly spreading market of the mobile era this may never have been possible. YouTube has been seeing a lot of web traffic from Apple iPads and Google’s Android OS. Not only are these visitors helping boost YouTube’s visitor count but also helping social media websites. Back in September Facebook had reached their 1 billionth active user. With the internet basically everywhere we go, we can’t seem to stop ourselves checking in on these sites.

YouTube wasn’t always such a hotspot. YouTube was originally founded by a group of PayPal employees. In 2006 Google jumped in and bought the website for a hefty $1.65 billion dollars. Google could now incorporate YouTube videos right into its search engine.

With such a large audience, ranging from 5 year olds to 100 year olds, advertisers have been quick to take notice. We are now starting to see more and more ads being incorporated right into YouTube videos; whether YouTube adds them or the YouTuber themself adds them.

YouTube receives about 20 hours of video playback every minute and those numbers are only going up. With videos such as music videos or the popular Harlem Shake, it’s safe to say that Google will do extremely well in the years to come with YouTube.
