Just last week Microsoft was hit by a €561 million euros ($731 million; conversion rate: $1 = €0.7677) fine for breaking an EU antitrust regulator. Back in 2009, the EU set up an investigation stating that Microsoft was creating unfair advantages when it came to their web browser. When installing a new version of Windows 8, for example, the preinstalled web browser is Internet Explorer 10. The EU believes that customers should have the option to install an alternative web browser when installing Windows. To settle the antitrust case Microsoft promised that it would offer its European customers a choice…

Two months ago I wrote an article here about how the Library of Congress had made it illegal to unlock cell phones without the wireless carrier’s consent. An unlocked cell phone is basically a smartphone that can be used on any wireless carrier, which meant AT&T customers could leave for Verizon but continue to use the same device. This had negative effects on both companies. Since the ruling of the law 114,000+ people have signed an internet petition asking the Library of Congress to change the law on unlocking smartphones. The White House, on the other hand, has also come…

Not too long ago I wrote an article about the development of Google Glasses. Now they have moved past the concept side of the project and are going head first into their prototypes. The glasses are not really glasses at all. It is a small attachment that fits to any glasses frame. Basically, we have now reached the point where a smartphone can be anywhere. With features such as Google searches, GPS, weather, phone calls, text messages, and so much more it’s truly amazing how far technology has brought us. Google has not announced a price or release date for…

Lately, Blackberry has been reaching a point of no-return and is close to full bankruptcy. Figure 1 – CEO Thorstein Heins at Blackberry’s show. Starting off the major changes, Blackberry has dropped their old uncommon name, RIM, and will now be known solely as Blackberry. “From today on, we are Blackberry everywhere in the world…One Brand, One Promise” said president and CEO Thorstein Heins. Have you ever wondered why smartphones online can cost up to $800 whereas inside the Wireless Carrier’s store its only $199? Wireless Carriers do this as an incentive to customers, so that they will buy a two-year agreement. But what happens if you sign-up for a Pre-Paid and get the smartphone at a low, low cost just to switch carriers? Carriers such as AT&T install specific locks onto their smartphones to prevent the movement of phones to another carrier. Many clever programmers have found a way around this lock by simply removing it and reselling the device as an “unlocked…

PayPal has grown into a $4.4 billion dollar company which is more than eBay could have ever thought of. With the advancement of Near Communication Fields (NFC) being implemented into today’s smartphones many companies are seeing how this could affect their business.…

With more than half of Americans owning a smartphone it is easy to say many companies want to be number one in the market. We have iOS, Apple’s user-friendly interface that runs on all of their mobile devices, Android, which is Google’s superior operation system that runs on a large number of devices, and last but not least there is Blackberry OS, the go-to business phone.
