Following the release of Apple’s brand new iPhone 5s with the world’s first 64bit processor for smartphones, Samsung is following their competitor’s example by creating their own 64bit CPU.

Defined to work as a “2-step approach” Samsung has stated that their 64bit CPU’s design will be based on the ARM architecture.

As Apple gathered an audience with the release of a 64bit processor, many reviewers stated that even with such a powerful processor, the iPhone could not even come close to the processor’s full potential. As Samsung did not state to the press which devices a 64bit processor is being designed for, it is rumored that we will see it in the Galaxy S5.

Samsung’s President of System LSI had this to say: “We are marching on schedule. We will offer the first 64-bit [processor] based on ARM’s own core. After that, we will offer an even more optimized 64-bit [processor] based on our own optimizations.”

As smartphones are now receiving curved displays, and are being manufactured with close to 4GB of RAM, a global push to 64bit processors seems to be the next wave of technology. As Samsung and Apple will battle it out on phone specifications, it will be quite interesting to see what they have in store for a 2014 release.
