Car engines are some of the most complex and well-engineered devices you can find in a public setting. All the moving parts, electronics, and materials go under a remarkable load each time you drive, so it’s no surprise that they can be difficult to fix when something goes wrong.
Oil leaks are some of the more common car engine issues, but finding that leak can be hard to do when your eyes only have a top down view of the engine. The same goes for your air conditioner vents within your home. How do you fix something you can’t see?
Many of us have probably heard about a borescope from our visits to the doctor. Doctors use a long tube that holds a camera on one end with bright LEDs to diagnose problems inside your body; these are usually referred to as endoscopes. This allows them to get a picture view of the problem that they wouldn’t be able to see otherwise.
The same goes for car mechanics. You can’t fix what you can’t see, so many repair shops have purchased borescopes to get a different view of the engine problem.
With their increased popularity, borescopes have become more readily available to the general public, allowing us to do general self-repair or to find that missing remote under the couch.
Having used higher end borescopes for my own car repair, I have a general understanding of their ability. So when CooCheer, an Amazon retailer, reached out to me asking if I would like to review their inexpensive borescope, I felt like this was a great opportunity to actually find out whether or not you need the expensive borescope in the first place.
Welcome to my review of the CooCheer Borescope camera. I will be taking a quick look at this unit and discussing the design, functionality, and my final thoughts. A special thank you to CooCheer for providing me with this device.
Design
The model sent to me was the 11.5 ft. length unit, which I find to be more than enough for nearly all applications. The black rubber cable is bendable (to a degree) and quite resistant when boring its way through tight holes or warm environments.
At the other end of the cable is a micro USB cable for the phone followed by an image capture button and microphone for sound recording. When in use by your PC, a micro USB to full sized USB cable is provided.
Furthermore, for additional applications, the camera end of the borescope can hold attachments such as a backwards facing mirror, a hook tool, or a magnetic for light screw retrieval. While the magnet is adequate, the mirror attachment is nearly pointless due to its small size.
Functionality
To get started with your borescope, Windows software or the Android application (Sorry no Apple support here) are required to be used for this device. For Android users, CooCheer provides a user manual with some QR codes on the front. Scanning the QR code leads you to a strange website that then downloads an Android application to your phone. While being safe, the application did seem shady. For Windows, a CD is provided with the program you’ll need.
After installation of the software, it’s as simple as connecting the borescope to your phone or PC to instantly begin receiving a camera feed.
When using the borescope, the camera quality is decent for most jobs. There are some bright white LEDs built into the camera that do a great job at lighting things up in dark places.
When using the borescope on Android, you can only receive a maximum 640 x 480 resolution which can be a bummer. At that resolution you can still make things out without looking at a fuzzy picture, but it would have been great if it supported the 1280 x 720 resolution like it does on the PC.
In day light, I can make out a leaky spot on the engine or even see into dark spaces. The best way I can describe the picture quality is good enough, but you can be the judge from these photos taken from my Android phone.
Something I took interest in with this borescope was the fact that it is water proof up to 3 feet of water for 30 minutes. This was helpful when wanting to repair a leaky pipe within my pool system.
My Final Thoughts
Priced at $19.99, this tool comes in handy from time to time. It is no better or worse than my higher end borescope, so I have no second thought on recommending this product to those looking for this sort of tool. CooCheer has been in our review spotlight before, and this time around they did it again with a well working product.
