On this June 1st 2015 afternoon, Microsoft officially announced that Windows 10, the latest operating system of Microsoft, will be released to users starting July 29th.
If you happen to be running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, you’ll notice a brand new icon in your task bar, to the left of the clock. This icon will be a white Windows logo that symbolizes your Windows 10 upgrade.
What makes Windows 10 upgrade different than other Windows operating systems? Well, this upgrade is completely free, provided you upgrade to it by July 28th 2016. Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users will just have to reserve their new upgrade and the installation, in theory, should take care of itself, upgrading and installing without user interfering.
To reserve your free upgrade, click the icon and enter your email into the “Reserve your free upgrade” field. You’ll receive an “All Set” message and the icon will quietly wait there until July 29th. Once that day hits, you will be placed into a cue where, sooner rather than later, Microsoft servers will grant you access to download Windows 10. 3GB of free space will be required for the new installation.
Please note that day-one operating system installations will not be perfect. This is Microsoft’s first approach at this type of upgrade and things are bound to fail, no matter how much they test the system. Ensure to do a complete backup of your system to ensure safe keeping of your important files.
Microsoft VP of operating systems, Terry Myerson, stated “With Windows 10, we start delivering on our vision of more personal computing.”
I’ve been using Windows 10 on an Azure Virtual Machine for a little while now and while old features are gone from the OS, new ones arrive to help you along your day. Cortana is a well optimized voice assistant, while new icons and menus offer a refresh to the OS, although the design of the new icons and menus is questionable in my opinion.
Your tablets, Windows Phones, PC, laptops, and basically any device running Windows 7+ will benefit from Microsoft’s new offer. Get ready and hold on for the update day which funnily enough, is on a Wednesday and not a Tuesday.
