Three months after the end of Microsoft support for Windows XP, Oracle has taken a quiet approach to end all support for their for Java running on the Windows XP platform.
With quarterly security updates, Oracle has stated that the upcoming July 15th updates will not be available for Windows XP. Users will be left to use Java 7u60.
With Java being one of the largest security risks for personal computers, ending support for it puts Windows XP into an even deeper hole. In Oracle’s FAQ section you can find that their decisions for this action follow those of Microsoft. Java 7 will be available for XP whilst the upcoming Java 8 will not.
When Hennrik Stahl, vice president of product management at Oracle, was contacted by ZDNet about the Java update he had the following to say:
“As you know, Microsoft no longer supports Windows XP and recommend their users to upgrade to more recent versions in order to maintain a stable and secure environment.
“Oracle makes the same recommendation to our users running Java on Windows, and also has a standing recommendation that users stay current with the most recent Java security baseline—currently available for the public as Java 7 and 8. There are a few compatibility issues with Java 8 on Windows XP, since it is not an officially supported configuration. We are looking at ways to resolve these.”
“Java users on more recent Windows versions can choose between Java 7 and 8, and depending on their choice will be kept up to date with the most recent Java 7 or 8 security update respectively.”
Windows XP is an old operating system, and continuing to run Windows XP in this day of age, just doesn’t make sense. With most major United States businesses finalizing the transition into Windows 7, the consumer market should do the same. My recommendation about the matter is to uninstall Java if you are on a Windows XP system. With the lack of security updates from both Microsoft and Oracle, your system could become compromised.

I saw the version 8 build 5, is it still working on xp?
I hate to burst MS and Oracles bubbles but….95% of CNC machines use Windows XP/PRO for their OS. Ot has to do with bool and the ability it use ECOdrive systems. I have spoken with the techs that support the MAZAK that I operate and he said that anything other than the Win XP family is not compatible with any part of the system. Granted, he said, they are in the process to reprogram their entire line of CNC’s but the cost will cost quite a bit including getting their suppliers to change also. This forced change, industry wide, will be passed onto the consumers and secondary mfg at quite an expense.This is a sad example of greed in my opinion.
