We all know the frustration that comes with plugging in a USB device. It seems that no matter how hard we try, the first plug-in attempt is always wrong.
This year at CES, the producers behind USB are making a strong effort to simplify this small, useful device. Dubbed USB Type-C or USB 3.1, the group showcased some prototypes of this new device, and how it is faster, stronger, and easier.
USB Type-C is a reversible connection that can be used from either side. Moreover, the new connector can be plugged into the device in any direction; gone are the days of getting it wrong on the first shot. USB Type-C also adds the new USB 3.1 standard which provides a top speed of 10Gbps.
We first saw this type of strange connector on the newer iOS devices with Apple’s Lighting Connector and how it can be plugged in using any direction. Furthermore, this new increase of speed will now allow USB to compete against Intel’s Thunderbolt.
Type-C is also a smaller size than a full size USB and is similar to MicroUSB. The group claims that it is stronger than MicroUSB and should break less easily while in use, although this will depend on the manufacturer of the cable.
It keeps getting better with USB Type-C having the ability to carry higher power and is now powerful enough to charge more mobile devices or even laptops. Currently, the Nokia N1 tablet is the only unit to support this new type of connector.
Expectations are that USB Type-C will launch in March of this year and it will be an exciting future with what the USB group has to offer. I would assume that new adapters for older devices will also become available for a low cost.
