If I were to create a poll asking random people if they preferred a Lamborghini Aventador over a Ford Taurus, there is a strong chance most people would choose the Lamborghini. So why is that?

As humans, we tend to engineer everything to a better standard than the previous generation. In our complex minds, we seem to believe that the more power and more speed a certain object has, the better it is. We wouldn’t be wrong for thinking that, as the Lamborghini has a zero to sixty time of just 2.9 seconds whereas the Ford takes 6.6 seconds.

These thoughts are seen all over the place, even in computing. When shopping for a new computer or building one for ourselves, we seek out products with the fastest core clock or higher speed memory. Why? Because it can perform our computer related tasks at the speeds we desire.

What’s amazing is that technology has allowed us to increase performance yet decrease the size of the product. Returning to my car analogy, a Lamborghini is significantly smaller over a Ford, but still maintains a high level of performance. The same goes for USB flash drives, increasing their performance, yet compacting them into tiny cases.

Kingston has succeeded their competitors in the flash drive market by offering an incredible range of different drives. Their gaming orientated branch, HyperX, has just joined the market with their newest and latest HyperX Fury flash drive. With its compact size and stylish design, the Fury drive is a clear sign on how technology can truly increase performance whilst decreasing size.

Welcome to my Kingston HyperX Fury USB 3.0 flash drive review. Throughout this review, I will be covering the following aspects of the drive: the design, functionality, and finally my overall thoughts. I would like to give a special thank you to Kingston for providing me with this unit.

    The Design

Kingston’s largest and well known label of flash drives, the DataTraveler series, offers great brand recognition and includes some of Kingston’s flagship flash drives. However, this current drive has entered a totally different line up, the Fury brand. Named under the HyperX brand only, Fury is a codename for gaming orientated products such as Fury memory, Fury SSDs, and now Fury flash drives.

Beginning with the physical dimensions of the drive, we find a short length of 2.3 inches (60.23mm), a width of 0.84 inches (21.40mm) and a tiny height of 0.38 inches (9.80mm). Thanks to this small form factor, the Fury drive never interferes with the surrounding USB ports. One problem many people have, including myself, is USB devices which have a body that extends to the next USB port, making that port unusable; this isn’t the case with the Fury drive. Likewise, the compact size allows for easy pocket traveling while still being large enough for you not to misplace it.

The outer shell marks a unique HyperX logo on the bottom and a gamer type design on the face. The front face style provides a glossy aggressive look to it and depending on the model chosen, will be an option of three colors: red, blue, and black.

Having reviewed the 64GB model that is black, I found that the black look offered a subtle feel and wasn’t too flashy. Even though both the red and blue models offer some nice color to what is otherwise a black design, I personally believe that the 64GB black model is the best looking.

Speaking about the looks, the glossy design on top is different than most would expect and it does stay free of fingerprints regardless of being glossy. The only small personal annoyance I had was that the cap flows with the lines of the design. If you happened to put the cap on the other way, you lose the design flow.

Finally, the body of the Fury drive is strong and has ridges located on the sides to increase friction between your fingers and the drive when inserting and removing the device. On the rear of the casing is a key ring bar that can be useful to some users.

    Functionality

Even though the Fury is a non-encrypted drive, it certainly makes up for any losses in its performance. USB 3.0 speeds are the standard for the world and any device that uses USB 3.0 must meet certain requirements.

The Fury drive claims to have a maximum data read speed of 90MB/s and a writing speed of 30MB/s. When transferring small megabyte files, the Fury drive easily reached both of those numbers. While transferring a 2GB folder containing thousands of files, the result can vary. I found my write speed to fall between 10MB/s and 25MB/s, but mostly hovering around the lower end. This is acceptable as there is also a limitation of the operating system, chipset, and the drive itself. Reading speeds stayed consistent no matter what the task hovering around 60MB/s to 80MB/s. Keep in mind that these results can vary and are still much quicker than a USB 2.0 device.

Finally, for those that are interested, there are the full specifications of the flash drive:

    My Overall Thoughts

In the long run, the Kingston HyperX Fury is a superb flash drive that can compete with the big competitors of the USB market. Its style is unique and offered in three storage capacities allows users to pick and choose. For my 64GB model, you can find it online priced at $29.99 which is not too bad for a 64GB flash drive. All in all, with its standard five year warranty, the Fury drive is a recommended purchase for any user who wishes to use a quick USB flash drive and maintain a compact size.
