When it comes time for a new computer or you take the journey into the new world of solid state drives, the same problem arises: how am I going to move my data to my new drive?

As time progresses, our hard drives rack up megabyte after megabyte of all of our personal data. Attempting to transfer all of that data could take hours, and there is always the question of “Did you remember to gather all of the files?”

Instead of wondering or wasting time moving file after file to your new drive, why not allow some inexpensive and easy to use software take care of it for you? And wouldn’t it be better if you didn’t need to reinstall your Windows operating system?

With the new edition of Paragon’s Migrate OS to SSD 4.0 software, users now have the ability to easily and quickly transfer an entire operating system to a new solid state drive. Throughout my review of the Paragon Migrate OS to SSD 4.0 software I will be covering the following topics: an overview, features, and my final thoughts. I would like to thank Paragon-Software for providing me with the software to review.

    A Full Software Overview

The software begins after a simple and quick downloadable installation onto your old hard drive. Once installed, you are greeted, not with a fancy user interface or a program with multiple functions, but rather a simple window explaining the process.

Before you begin transferring your data, make sure your new solid state drive is formatted to the NTFS format. This is crucial since you should ensure your new drive is functioning correctly.

Next, the software will begin analyzing your hardware. Here the software will check for the current operating system, compatible hardware, and for which files/folders to be transferred. Once the analysis has finished, the software will display all files/folders that will be transferred.

Then, you are greeted with the final step. The software will display your current operating system, and explain what solid state drive will be receiving the new data. You will also be able to see a visual indication of how much data will be placed on the drive. If you are transferring more data than your solid state has to offer, then you can easily deselect files/folders that will be moved. For example, you may wish to not transfer old music.

Finally, after you click the Copy button and wait around half an hour to an hour, depending on your hardware, you will now have a fully cloned solid state drive. Changing your BIOS boot method to your new drive is as simple as following your motherboard’s manual, and then you are ready to go.

It amazes me how easy this process is. With the click of four buttons, your data and operating system are moved to your new quick solid state drive. No longer are you required to sit for hours transferring programs, reinstalling Windows, and moving files to your new system.

    Features

Believe it or not, the software actually has a lot more than it shows. With nearly everything being done in the background the software takes care of any worries or issues you may run into.

Being the newest version, the 4.0 edition has the ability to transfer data from any Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8.1, or Windows Server 2012 R2 machine. Plus, the software takes care of uEFI/GPT configurations to ensure a painless computer reboot.

Whilst running the migration wizard, it should be noted that you can actually transfer a dual boot computer. With the ability to check for one or two partitions, if you run a dual Windows boot, you can choose for one or the other OS to be transferred.

It gets even better with the wizard able to work in the background whilst you work as well. The wizard is run in a live environment meaning you can work on the PC without interrupting the transfer. Plus, the wizard has advanced data exclusion capabilities, meaning you can move a 250GB hard drive to a 120GB solid state drive. You will need to discard some files, but it may be worth it as your old hard drive can now become a storage drive. Just always be sure the data is backed somewhere else for the meantime.

Finally, it should be noted that even though the wizard provides you with important files, it may miss some files. Paragon states that the software only transfers partitions that contain the chosen Windows OS and system boot critical files. Before formatting or removing your previous hard drive ensure that all data was correctly transferred. I would recommend a two week hold before removing the old drive.

    My Final Thoughts

In the end, what I am most pleased about is the simplicity of the software. Paragon-Software takes care of the frustrations that come with similar software and turns it into an easy and automated process. For only $19.99, I found it to be well worth it and the fact that that it transfers even the operating system is outstanding.
