Following answers to the questions asked by the jury last week, the eight-member jury came to the conclusion that both Apple and Samsung were at fault for patent-infringement.
The outcome was a $119.6 million Samsung payout to Apple for lost income since Apple claimed they lost customers to Samsung products. As the jury also found Apple guilty of patent-infringement they concluded that Apple should pay $158,400 to Samsung for patent-infringement.
These payouts are far less than either company was looking for, as it was expected to be a payout of billions of dollars. The jury found that both tech giants were infringing on both software and hardware patents and decided that this payout was reasonable.
During this week, there will be a second hearing to reconsider one of the damages claims as Samsung was looking for $6.2 million compared to the $160 thousand that they received. As Samsung held back all comments, an Apple spokesman had this to say: “Today’s ruling reinforces what courts around the world have already found: that Samsung willfully stole our ideas and copied our products. We are fighting to defend the hard work that goes into beloved products like the iPhone, which our employees devote their lives to designing and delivering for our customers.”
As the fighting and court cases continue, I believe that Samsung and Apple will battle it out until they are out of money. Their rivalry to become the largest and best technical giant will always remain and finding a point where they are both happy will be impossible. This may be the end of this Samsung vs. Apple case, but it probably won’t be the last.
