Advanced Micro Devices has taken the challenge of impressing the world with its very first ARM processor.

Competing against Intel, in the desktop and laptop markets, and now Samsung/QUALCOMM, in the processor market, AMD is looking to expand its CPU line into smartphones and tablets.

So far so good, as AMD is taking its new Opteron A1100 series CPU, which is designed for servers, and redesigning it to have an integrated 8-core processor meaning this will be the world’s first 64-bit ARM CPU. AMD will also be using the Cortex-A57 processor design which is the “highest performing processor” according to ARM.

AMD did not have anything to mention about pricing, availability, or if it will be offered to the consumer market but it did have this to say about its project:

“AMD is collaborating with industry leaders to enable a…64-bit software ecosystem for ARM-based designs from compilers and simulators to hypervisors, operating systems and application software.”

AMD has a long and bumpy road ahead of them as by now they are far behind in knowledge of the ARM processor. I feel as if AMD does have a shot here but instead of using the Opteron CPU they should rather use their new APUs which would include a high performance processor as well as a high performance graphics processor. The only way to win a market controlled by Samsung and QUALCOMM is to come in at a lower price.
