To kick off their CES presence, graphics card manufacturer, NVidia, has created a new type of mobile graphics chip so advanced “you’ll think extraterrestrial life was behind [it]”.

Known as the 192-core Tegra K1, the new type of GPU incorporates NVidia’s Kepler software which is what currently dominates the graphics market. Announced was not one, but two versions of this unheard of GPU chip, one that runs a Quad A15 CPU at 32bits and another that runs a dual Denver CPU at 64bits.

“It’s the most successful architecture we’ve created,” said CEO Jen-Hsun Huang. “It’s almost inappropriate to call it Tegra 5, because it’s simply not linear.”

To give the new chip even more finesses, Huang correspondingly also announced that the games producer, Epic Games will bring their next generation game engine, the Unreal Engine 4, to the Tegra K1., making new mobile games even crisper and more vibrant.

As consumers move to mobile devices, NVidia has no option but to follow along the trend. Following the steps of Intel, NVidia is making bigger investments into mobile chips and attempting to make a business that is less dependent on the desktop PC.

As the plan is always into innovate, the new Tegra K1 will soon appear in popular mobile devices such as the Microsoft Surface and Google Nexus 7, but NVidias main goal here is to control the smartphone market; for graphics that is. Something interesting that Huang mentioned, was the hint of a partnership with automotive companies such as BMW, Tesla, and Audi. If you have taken a look at new 2015 car models you may have noticed that the front dash has lost the typical needles for your speedometer and tachometer, as they have been replaced with a full LCD display.

As more was said during NVidia’s Sunday show, I found this to be the most interesting. These desktop PC companies that have ruled the market for many years now are now having to change into a world that they know little of. As much as I am excited to see next generation graphics being pushed to the new mobile market, NVidia needs to remember that there are still many PC users left.

It is a CPU that would be used in products like tablets and smartphones.
NVidia has not released by specifications other than what is posted.
